Saxenda Side Effects Explained

Saxenda (Liraglutide) is a daily injection for weight loss. While effective, it can cause side effects. Here is how to manage them safely.

Saxenda works by mimicking a hormone called GLP-1 that regulates appetite. Because it affects your digestive system, gastrointestinal side effects are very common, particularly when you first start treatment.

Key Fact: Most side effects are mild and usually go away within a few days or weeks as your body adjusts to the medication.

Very Common Side Effects

These may affect more than 1 in 10 people:

Nausea (Feeling Sick)

The most frequent complaint. Usually improves with time.

Tip: Eat smaller meals and avoid strong smells.

Diarrhoea

Can lead to dehydration if persistent.

Tip: Drink plenty of water or electrolyte drinks.

Constipation

Common due to slowed digestion.

Tip: Increase fibre and fluid intake.

Headache

Often linked to dehydration or blood sugar changes.

Tip: Stay hydrated and rest.

Other Common Side Effects (Up to 1 in 10)

Serious Side Effects

Serious side effects are rare but require immediate medical attention. Stop using Saxenda and contact a doctor immediately if you experience:

Acute Pancreatitis

Severe, persistent pain in the abdomen which might reach through to your back, often with nausea and vomiting.

Severe Allergic Reactions

Problems breathing, swelling of face and throat, and a fast heartbeat.

Gallbladder Disease

Pain in the upper right side of your stomach, fever, yellowing of skin/eyes (jaundice).

Strategies for Daily Administration

1

Strict Titration

Saxenda's unique 0.6mg weekly escalation is designed specifically to mitigate nausea. Never jump doses prematurely.

2

Site Rotation

Continuously switch between your abdomen, thigh, and upper arm to prevent lipohypertrophy (lumps under the skin).

3

Timing Consistency

While food independence allows flexibility, injecting at the identical hour daily stabilizes blood concentrations and routines.
